Overview

Bandol is Provence's most serious rosé appellation, and this Gueissard bottling shows why. Mourvèdre-based rosés offer more structure, complexity, and savoury character than the typical pale pink wines. This is a rosé for wine lovers—equally at home with food as it is on its own.

Appearance

Pale salmon-pink with subtle copper hints
Medium legs

Classic Provence rosé colour—pale and elegant. The subtle copper tones hint at Mourvèdre's influence. Beautifully translucent.

Nose

Bandol rosé is the thinking person's pink wine—and this delivers beautifully. Fresh strawberry and raspberry provide an immediate fruit core, but there's more complexity here than typical Provence rosé. White peach adds richness, while a savoury, almost meaty note (Mourvèdre's signature) provides intrigue. Dried herbs—thyme and wild rosemary—evoke the Provençal hillsides. Subtle minerality adds to the serious character.

Terroir

Bandol's amphitheatre of vineyards faces the Mediterranean, benefiting from maximum sun exposure while sea breezes moderate temperatures. The mistral wind keeps vineyards healthy. Terraced hillsides at 50-400m elevation create a complex mosaic of microclimates.

Geology

Limestone-clay with marlstone and sandstone
Triassic to Cretaceous (70-250 million years old)

Bandol's soils are derived from Triassic and Cretaceous sediments, creating complex terroirs. The limestone base provides drainage and minerality, while clay retains moisture—essential in this hot, dry climate. Marlstone adds mineral complexity. These soils stress the vines appropriately, concentrating flavours. Mourvèdre, which demands warmth and excellent drainage, thrives here uniquely.

Climate

Mediterranean
April to September, harvest typically September

Diurnal Range: 8-12°C during growing season

Vinification

Direct pressing (Pressurage direct)

Grapes harvested at night or early morning. Direct pressing for minimal skin contact, producing the pale colour. Fermentation at 16-18°C in temperature-controlled tanks. Sur lie ageing for several months adds richness and texture. Bandol rosé must contain minimum 50% Mourvèdre.
