Sandhi Central Coast Chardonnay

Central Coast Chardonnay 2024 13.4%
OUBTS Masterclass with Jackie Ang MW (5 Feb 2026)

Overview

This is a masterclass in restrained, terroir-driven California Chardonnay that eschews the region's typical opulence for Burgundian precision. The 2024 vintage displays remarkable clarity of fruit and crystalline acidity, offering immediate pleasure with its vibrant citrus profile while possessing the structural integrity to evolve gracefully. It captures the saline energy and cool-climate elegance of the Central Coast's transverse valleys, delivering a wine of sophistication and refreshment that speaks eloquently of its provenance. A testament to Sandhi's philosophy of transparency and restraint.

Appearance

Brilliant
Pale
Pale lemon core with pronounced greenish-silver reflections at the rim, indicating youth and cool-climate origins
Light to medium viscosity with delicate, slow-falling legs that suggest moderate alcohol and potential lees-derived texture

The crystalline clarity and pale lemon hue with green tints immediately signal a youthful, minimally manipulated Chardonnay from a cool vintage. The moderate viscosity hints at textural complexity derived from sur lie aging rather than heavy oak extraction, while the brilliant condition speaks to careful, reductive winemaking.

Nose

The nose erupts with crystalline intensity, offering an immediate impression of cool maritime breezes and crushed seashells. A vivid cascade of citrus oils—particularly fresh lemon zest and pithy white grapefruit—dominates the initial impression, interwoven with crisp orchard fruits and a distinct floral lift. Subtle autolytic character suggests extended lees contact, while delicate spice and toast notes provide architectural framing without obscuring the wine's inherent transparency. There is an almost electric freshness here, a chalky minerality that speaks to the Central Coast's unique transverse valley geology.

Terroir

The Central Coast appellation encompasses a vast stretch of California's coastline from San Francisco Bay to Santa Barbara County, unified by the cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean and the unique transverse mountain ranges that run east-west, funneling maritime fog and breezes inland. For Sandhi's regional Chardonnay, fruit is sourced from select cooler vineyard sites within this broad AVA—particularly from the western Santa Ynez Valley and Sta. Rita Hills—where the combination of elevation and proximity to the ocean creates an extended growing season. This environment yields grapes with pronounced natural acidity and moderate sugar accumulation, favoring citrus and stone fruit flavors over tropical ripeness. The diverse topography, ranging from ancient seabed benchlands to rolling hills, contributes to a wine of complexity and mineral tension that transcends its appellation-level pricing.

Geology

Diatomaceous earth, Marine sediment, Sandy loam, Shale, Limestone deposits
Miocene epoch (approximately 5-23 million years old), formed from marine sediments deposited when the region was submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean

These ancient seabed soils provide excellent drainage and low fertility, naturally restricting vine vigor and yielding small berries with concentrated flavors. The high silica content in diatomaceous earth—a fossilized remains of ancient marine phytoplankton—imparts a distinctive chalky, almost talcum-like texture and promotes the wine's characteristic mineral backbone and laser-like acidity.

Climate

Mediterranean maritime
Extended season typically running from April bud break through October harvest, characterized by persistent morning fog, afternoon sun exposure, and consistent maritime breezes that moderate temperature spikes

Diurnal Range: Significant diurnal shift of 30-40°F (17-22°C) between daytime highs and nighttime lows during the growing season

Vinification

Burgundian-inspired minimal intervention techniques emphasizing native fermentation and restrained oak usage

Whole-cluster pressing followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French oak barrels (primarily 228L barriques and 500L puncheons). New oak is typically restricted to less than 15% of the blend. The wine undergoes partial malolactic fermentation (approximately 30-50%) to preserve acidity while adding textural complexity, followed by 8-12 months aging sur lie with minimal batonnage to enhance mouthfeel without sacrificing precision.

Transparency and site-expression over power; the winemaking team seeks to reveal the distinct voice of the vineyards through gentle handling and restraint, avoiding heavy oak, high alcohol, and commercial manipulation that mask terroir, instead favoring wines of elegance, salinity, and energetic acidity.

Winery History

Founded: 2010

Sandhi was established by Master Sommelier Rajat Parr and winemaker Sashi Moorman as a collaborative project—the name 'Sandhi' means 'alliance' or 'collaboration' in Sanskrit—to produce terroir-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County's most compelling sites. The partnership emerged directly from Parr's influential 'In Pursuit of Balance' movement, which championed elegant, lower-alcohol, site-specific California wines in opposition to the extracted, oak-heavy styles that dominated the 1990s and 2000s.

Winemaker: Sashi Moorman

The winery operates on the principle that great wine is grown rather than made, with the cellar serving only to reveal what the vineyard provides through native fermentation, minimal sulfur additions, and a steadfast commitment to transparency and drinkability.
